Playa del Postiguet, the city beach of Alicante
Playa del Postiguet – the city beach in the heart of Alicante
Playa del Postiguet is the city beach of Alicante: a sandy beach in the middle of town, between the harbour and the Explanada on one side and the Benacantil hill with the Castillo de Santa Bárbara on the other. For a beach day in Alicante from Moraira it is the obvious choice, because you can combine swimming straight away with the castle, the old quarter and the promenade, all on foot.
The beach and its facilities
The Postiguet has fine, golden sand and is fully equipped as a city beach. In the bathing season there are lifeguards on duty, there are showers and a beach bar, and part of the beach has adapted access for people with reduced mobility. The beach itself is free to use.
Because the beach is in the middle of the city, it is often busy in July and August and at weekends. If you are after quiet, go early in the morning or choose spring or autumn, when the water is still pleasant and the promenade calmer.
Combining with the castle and the city
Across the road from the beach, on Avenida Juan Bautista Lafora, is the lift that takes you up through the hill to the Castillo de Santa Bárbara. A ticket costs € 2.70 per person in 2026; for pensioners and over-65s the lift is free. Entry to the castle itself is free. Read more about the castle, the walking routes up and the museum on our page about the Castillo de Santa Bárbara.
| Period | Opening hours, lift and castle |
|---|---|
| 15 November to 27 February | 10:00 to 18:00 |
| 28 February to 16 June | 10:00 to 20:00 |
| 17 June to 4 September | 10:00 to 23:00 |
| 5 September to 14 November | 10:00 to 20:00 |
The last lift up leaves about 40 minutes before closing time. Times can change; check them before you set off on the castle website. From the western end of the beach you walk straight onto the Explanada de España, with its wavy mosaic paving and palms, and behind it lies the centre. For the city as a whole, with the Mercado Central and the old quarter, read on at our page about Alicante.
From Moraira to Playa del Postiguet
By car
Alicante is about 80 kilometres from Moraira. By the AP-7 you are there in roughly 55 to 65 minutes. Around the beach and the harbour there are underground paid car parks; parking on the street is difficult in the centre. So for a full day, allow for the parking cost in your planning.
By public transport
ALSA runs a coach between Teulada/Moraira and Alicante. The tram is possible too, but it is a long ride: line 9 of the TRAM d’Alacant runs via Teulada, Benissa and Calpe among others to Benidorm, where you change to line 1 for Alicante. In the city you get off at Mercado or Luceros, a short walk from the beach. For more on buses and trams see our page on public transport in Moraira.
Tip: by boat to Tabarca
From the harbour of Alicante, right by the Postiguet, the Kontiki line sails to the island of Tabarca; the crossing takes about an hour. From Santa Pola the crossing is shorter. See our page on Santa Pola and Tabarca.
