Algar waterfalls from Moraira

Algar waterfalls – a natural oasis at Callosa d’en Sarrià

The Algar waterfalls, officially Les Fonts de l’Algar, lie inland near Callosa d’en Sarrià, about three quarters of an hour’s drive from Moraira. Here the little river Algar runs over limestone in a series of falls and natural pools, in which you may swim. The water stays cool all year, around 18 degrees on average, which makes it a popular way to cool off in summer after a morning in the heat.

What to see and do

From the entrance a path of about 1.5 kilometres runs along the river past the falls. Without swimming the walk takes around three quarters of an hour; with breaks and a dip, allow one to two hours. There are seven designated swimming spots, such as the Toll Blau and the Toll de la Caldera. At Easter and in summer there are lifeguards on duty; outside those periods you swim at your own risk.

Tips for your visit

In summer, come at opening time: around midday it is at its busiest and the car parks by the entrance fill up. Water shoes are useful on the slippery stones, and bring swimwear and a towel. Dogs are welcome from 16 September to 14 June, on a lead and not in the river. Outside high season it is quieter, and the walk along the water is then worth it even without swimming.

Combining with Guadalest

The mountain village of Guadalest lies about twenty minutes further inland. Many visitors combine the two in one day: a morning swim in the pools, then an afternoon through the Guadalest valley with its reservoir and a visit to the village of Guadalest.
