Explore El Campello
Discover El Campello – a charming coastal town on the Costa Blanca
El Campello is a coastal town just north of Alicante, between the city and Villajoyosa. It is not a tourist highlight with grand sights, but a place where fishing life is still visible: a working fishing harbour with a public fish auction, long beaches and an archaeological site right on the sea. A visit to El Campello from Moraira makes a good stop on the way to or from Alicante.
The beaches of El Campello
El Campello has a long coastline with two large sandy beaches and a string of smaller coves towards the north. Both main beaches hold a Blue Flag.
| Beach | Features |
|---|---|
| Platja de Muchavista | About 3.3 km long and wide, fine sand, towards San Juan. Facilities such as toilets, foot showers, lifeguards and adapted access for people with reduced mobility; a promenade runs along the beach. |
| Platja Carrer la Mar | About 1.8 km, fine sand, in the old fishermen’s quarter by the harbour, with a promenade and restaurants. |
| L’Almadrava and the northern coves | Smaller beaches of sand, shingle and rock towards the Illeta and further north; quieter and good for snorkelling. |
Fishing harbour and fish auction
What sets El Campello apart is the fish auction in the lonja by the fishing harbour, beside the beach of Carrer la Mar. From Monday to Friday the auction starts at 18:00, all year round. Visitors are welcome to watch the day’s catch being auctioned, and you can buy fish there directly as well. So plan your visit to be at the harbour late in the afternoon, and eat fish afterwards in one of the restaurants along the promenade.
La Illeta dels Banyets
On the edge of the harbour lies La Illeta dels Banyets, a small peninsula below the Torre de la Illeta watchtower. It was once an island and was reconnected to the mainland in the nineteen thirties. Remains of more than five thousand years of occupation have been found here: from the Bronze Age, an Iberian settlement, and from Roman times baths and fish tanks cut into the rock. The site is managed by the MARQ archaeological museum in Alicante.
Opening hours Illeta dels Banyets (winter 2026)
Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 15:30 to 17:30; Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 14:00; closed on Monday. Admission about € 3. Different hours apply in summer; check the current information on the MARQ website.
Markets
On Wednesday there is a weekly market by the town hall from 7:00 to 14:00. On Wednesday and Sunday, also from 7:00 to 14:00, there is a market on Avenida Ausiàs March.
From Moraira to El Campello
El Campello is about 71 kilometres from Moraira; by the AP-7 the drive takes around 50 minutes. The TRAM d’Alacant light rail links El Campello with Alicante, with stops along Muchavista beach, so it also combines well with a day in the city. For Alicante itself, with its castle and city beach, see our page on Alicante. To the north lies colourful Villajoyosa, easily added to the same day. If you are looking for beaches closer to home, see the beaches near Moraira.
