Who is open when

This is the hardest thing to work out in Moraira, because almost every place has its own closing day and most kitchens shut between lunch and dinner. Below it is set out place by place, with the walking time from our front door.

On Sunday and Monday

Those are the days when you can find a closed door in Moraira. On Sunday Carvón, Tasca Moraira and Bites en Bubbels are closed; open are Bar Enzo, Rincón de Moraira, Just Taste, Soho, Pluk and Moodz. On Monday Carvón and Moodz are shut; Rincón de Moraira, for its part, closes on Wednesday evening. Soho and Pluk are open seven days a week.

By time of day

Breakfast and coffee. Pluk on Avenida de la Paz opens at nine, Bites en Bubbels at ten. On weekdays those are the two addresses within walking distance; at the weekend Pluk is the one left.

Lunch. Most kitchens serve between 13:00 and 15:00 and close afterwards. If you want to eat later, Tasca Moraira and Soho Moraira stay open without a break, or Bites en Bubbels until the evening.

Tapas and drinks. Tasca Moraira for Spanish tapas, Just Taste for dishes to share with a DJ alongside. Moodz is a bar without a kitchen, so you go there after dinner.

Dinner. Carvón for the charcoal grill, Rincón de Moraira for meat, fish and rice dishes, Bar Enzo for a broader menu and Soho for something simpler. Carvón is the best-rated restaurant in the village and is listed in the Michelin guide.

What time people eat here

The Spanish have lunch around two and rarely dine before nine. Many kitchens only open at seven and take the last order around half past ten. Sit down at six and you will usually be the only ones there. That is no bad thing, but do not count on every kitchen being up and running by then.

Between midday and evening there is the merienda, around five or six: a coffee, a roll or an ice cream. That is what Pluk, Bites en Bubbels and the ice cream parlours in the village are for.

Booking

In July and August and on Friday and Saturday evenings booking is far from a luxury, certainly at Carvón (4.9 from 651 reviews) and Rincón de Moraira (well over a thousand reviews).

Each place’s page gives the telephone number, and where possible a button to book online or look at the menu. A few places do not take bookings; there, come early.

The walk from Calamora

From the central roundabout you can walk in two directions. Towards the church square you pass Bar Enzo and Carvón; that street, the Calle de la Iglesia, is the old heart of the village. Towards the sea you go along the Avenida de Madrid and the Calle del Dr. Calatayud past Soho, Just Taste and Rincón de Moraira, and come out at the promenade, the beach of l’Ampolla and the castle. Tasca Moraira is on that side, on the Calle Playa.

The whole route is lit and level. Everything is manageable with a pushchair or if you are unsteady on your feet.

In winter

From November to March Moraira is considerably quieter. Some places then keep shorter hours or close an extra day. Call before you go, or just walk past: within walking distance that costs you nothing. The Friday market and the ice cream parlours carry on all year.
