Xiringuito Olalà: a beach restaurant at Cala Baladrar near Benissa

Xiringuito Olalà: eating under the pines at Cala Baladrar

Xiringuito Olalà sits at Cala Baladrar, a pebble cove in the countryside of Benissa, some ten minutes’ drive from Moraira. You sit under the pines looking out over the bay. This is our favourite among the beach restaurants: one of the few where the food is as good as the setting.

Parking and the path down

This is the one real drawback and it is worth knowing before you go. Parking at Cala Baladrar is limited and full by about eleven in July and August. You walk the last stretch down to the cove on an unsurfaced, sloping path. Come before ten or after four, and wear shoes you can manage a slope in. Anyone unsteady on their feet will struggle here.

Location

Xiringuito Olalà is on the Carrer de la Manta, the road that drops down to Cala Baladrar. The cove lies between Moraira and Calpe, on the coastal stretch of the municipality of Benissa. From Calamora you drive towards Benissa and take the road to the coast there.

The kitchen and the menu

A Mediterranean beach menu with fish, squid, salads and rice dishes. Reviewers mention the calamar far more often than anything else, and after that the paella and the gazpacho. There is live music at regular intervals; they post what is playing on Instagram at @olalacalabaladrar.

Opening hours and booking

Is it suitable if I am unsteady on my feet?

Less so. You walk the last stretch down to the cove on an unsurfaced, sloping path, and the parking is not next to the restaurant. Anyone who walks with difficulty is better off at a beach restaurant you can reach by car right to the door.
