What to know at the desk
This is the part most websites skip, and it is exactly where things go wrong. Four things are best arranged in advance.
- A credit card in the main driver’s name. In Spain most companies require one for the deposit. The amount is blocked temporarily and releasing it can take up to thirty days. On some cars the deposit may be paid in cash or with a suitable debit card, and Sunny Cars has a separate service for it: No Deposit. You book that at least five days in advance and register at least 48 hours in advance; then you need show no credit card at pick-up.
- Every driver must be named on the rental contract and present at pick-up, with a licence and identification. If someone drives who is not on it, damage is not covered. A second driver is not included in the all-inclusive price as standard: you arrange that in advance or pay for it on signing, locally.
- A child seat is reserved in advance but paid for locally. The number of seats is limited, so do not leave it. In Spain a child seat is required up to a height of 135 centimetres, and the child belongs in the back.
- If you want to cross the border, to France or Portugal, you arrange that when booking and not at the desk. The company may charge a surcharge for it. If you do not and you go anyway, the insurance lapses. From Spain to Morocco is not allowed.
A driving licence from an EU or EEA country is valid in Spain; within the European Union you need no International Driving Permit. If yours was issued elsewhere, check before you travel. The fuel policy is fair: you return the car with the same fuel level it had when you collected it. If the tank is only half full at pick-up, have that written on the contract.
Check this before you drive off: the V-16
Since 1 January 2026 the orange roof beacon, the V-16 conectada, has been the only legal way in Spain to mark a stationary vehicle. The warning triangle has been withdrawn with it. The beacon has its own SIM card and reports your location to the traffic authority when used; you need no phone and no subscription for it.
Why this concerns you: a hire car has Spanish plates and therefore falls under the rule, and the driver is responsible for what is in the car. If the beacon is missing, that is a fine of eighty euros. So check at pick-up whether it is there, and have it noted if it is not. If you arrive in your own foreign-registered car, the opposite applies: you may keep your warning triangles.
While you are at it, check that there is a high-visibility vest in the cabin rather than in the boot. You have to put it on before you step out at a stop, by day and by night; not wearing it costs two hundred euros and four penalty points.
From the airport to Moraira
From Alicante it is about 95 kilometres and takes an hour to an hour and a quarter. You take the AP-7 north and leave at exit 63, signposted Teulada, Benissa and Calpe; then the N-332 and the CV-743 into Moraira. From Valencia it is about 125 kilometres and an hour and a half: the AP-7 south, the same exit 63.
You pay no toll on this route. The AP-7 between Alicante and Valencia has been toll-free since 1 January 2020, when the concession expired. You will still find travel information calling the AP-7 a toll road here; that is out of date. The stretch of AP-7 where toll does still apply lies south of Alicante, towards Murcia and Almería — the other direction.
For other destinations on this coast: exit 62 for Ondara, Dénia and Jávea, exit 63 for Teulada, Benissa, Calpe and Moraira, exit 64 for Altea and exit 65 for Benidorm.
Your car at Calamora
You park in the large car park across the road, and that is free. Note that on Fridays the rear section is reserved for the weekly market; signs on site make that clear. Calamora sits on the central roundabout of Moraira, so you are straight back onto the main road towards Calpe, Jávea or the hinterland.

Do I need a credit card to hire a car in Spain?

What does the all-inclusive price cover?
All the insurance: third-party liability with additional cover up to ten million euros, damage cover and theft cover, and also damage to glass, tyres, underbody and roof. Loss of the keys or the vehicle documents, damage to the radio or navigation after a break-in and the recovery costs after an accident are reimbursed. Mileage is unlimited, and the airport surcharges and local taxes are in the rental sum.
Do I really get the excess back?
Yes, but you pay it on the spot first. In the event of damage you pay first and then claim it from Sunny Cars, who refund it to you. So keep the rental contract, the final invoice, the damage report, photographs and your credit card statement.
What do I still pay locally, then?
The deposit, if you have not booked the No Deposit service. Beyond that a child seat, a second driver, any surcharge for a driver under twenty-five and a surcharge if you want to cross the border. Traffic fines always remain at your own expense.
May my partner drive as well?
Only if he or she is named on the rental contract. Every driver must be present at pick-up with a licence and identification. If someone drives who is not on the contract, damage is not covered. A second driver is not included in the all-inclusive price as standard.
Until when can I cancel?
Free of charge up to an hour before the rental period starts, whatever the reason. Changes have a different deadline: those are free up to 24 hours in advance. If you do not turn up without cancelling, the rental sum is not refunded.
