Picking up a hire car at Valencia Airport

Valencia is the second airport for this coast, and for Dénia and its surroundings a good alternative: from there it is roughly as far as Alicante. For Moraira, Alicante is clearly closer. Collecting a car works slightly differently here than in Alicante, and one difference regularly costs people their patience: two well-known companies sit outside the airport.

Where the desks are

According to Aena the car hire desks are on floor 0 in the arrivals hall, in the Zona rent a car — Llegadas. The cars are in car park P1, a minute from the terminal; you cross the road and follow the Rent a Car signs. The height limit of that car park is 2.30 metres, worth knowing if you have a large car or a roof box. Of the car park levels per company, only OK Mobility is published: level 1.

The difference that catches people out

Aena lists eight companies with a desk at the airport: Avis, Enterprise, Europcar, Goldcar-InterRent, Hertz, OK Mobility, Sicily by Car and Sixt.

Centauro and Record Go are not in the terminal here. Both run a shuttle with a meeting point at car park P6: you walk out of the arrivals hall, past the taxi rank, and cross at the roundabout to P6. Centauro is about seven minutes away by road and runs a bus every ten to fifteen minutes. At Alicante Airport these two are inside the terminal — going by the name alone will catch you out here.

Give your flight number when you book here too; both companies say the bus will then be waiting.

How late can you collect?

Aena does not publish opening hours. This is what we found from the companies themselves:

For Avis, Enterprise, Goldcar-InterRent, Hertz, Sicily by Car and Record Go we found no opening hours. The picture here is tighter than in Alicante: everything we found closes between 23:00 and 00:30, and we found no company open after 00:30 and no key box arrangement either. If you land in the middle of the night, agree it in advance or set the pick-up to the next day.

From the airport to the coast

You leave the airport on the V-11, then take the V-30 to the AP-7 and follow it south, past Gandia and Oliva. After that it is a matter of taking the right exit:

For Dénia and Jávea that is exit 62; for Teulada, Moraira, Benissa and Calpe exit 63, and then the N-332 and the CV-743.

You pay no toll. The AP-7 between Valencia and Alicante has been toll-free since 1 January 2020. You will still find travel information calling this route a toll road — including pages about the drive from Valencia to Moraira — and that is out of date.

Those distances and driving times are estimates; no official figure exists. For the destinations marked as not published we found no reliable source from Valencia.

What you still pay at the desk

This is the part most websites skip, and it is exactly where things go wrong.

• The deposit. In Spain most companies require a credit card in the main driver’s name. The amount is blocked rather than charged, and releasing it can take up to thirty days. On some cars it may be paid in cash or with a suitable debit card, and Sunny Cars has a separate service for it: No Deposit, to be booked up to five days before pick-up with registration up to 48 hours before.
• A second driver. Not included in the all-inclusive price as standard. Every driver must be named on the contract and present at pick-up with a licence and identification; if someone drives who is not on it, damage is not covered.
• A child seat. You reserve it in advance but pay for it locally. In Spain a child restraint is required up to 135 centimetres in height, and the child belongs in the back.
• A cross-border surcharge. France or Portugal is possible, but you arrange it when you book. If you do not and you go anyway, the insurance lapses. Morocco is not allowed.
• Traffic fines. Those are always yours.

The V-16: check this before you drive off

Since 1 January 2026 the orange roof beacon, the V-16 conectada, has been the only legal way in Spain to mark a stationary vehicle. The warning triangle has been withdrawn. The beacon has its own SIM card and reports your location to the traffic authority when you use it.

A hire car has Spanish plates and therefore falls under the rule, and the driver is responsible for what is in the car. If the beacon is missing, that is a fine of eighty euros. Check at pick-up whether it is there, and have it noted if it is not. If you arrive in your own foreign-registered car, the opposite applies: you may keep your warning triangles.

While you are at it, check that there is a high-visibility vest in the cabin rather than in the boot. You put it on before you step out at a stop, by day and by night; not wearing it costs two hundred euros and four penalty points.
