When and where

The morning is usually the best time: less wind, flatter water and fewer boats. In summer it is busy with boat traffic around El Portet; stay close in under the coast and out of the channel by the marina. In an offshore wind you are better off not going far out. Experienced kayakers can follow the coast as far as Cala Llebeig; beginners are better off staying in the bay of El Portet.

  • Always wear the buoyancy aid you are given with the hire.
  • Take water, sunscreen and a cap; there is no shade out on the water.
  • Combine the trip with snorkelling: tips on the best spots are at diving and snorkelling in Moraira.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I hire a SUP board or a kayak in Moraira?

SUP boards and kayaks can be hired from several beach hire businesses on Playa El Portet and Playa de l’Ampolla. There are sometimes hire businesses at the marina as well. Prices vary from about €20–35 an hour. No booking needed outside high season.

Is stand-up paddleboarding hard for beginners?

No, SUP is quick to learn. In calm water – such as El Portet on a windless day – most people are standing up within 15 minutes. Start on your knees if it proves tricky and work your way up slowly. Hire businesses always give a short briefing with the hire.

Which coves are best for a kayak trip near Moraira?

Playa El Portet (calm, sheltered) is ideal as a starting point. From there you can paddle towards the Cap d’Or and explore the rocky coast. For more experienced kayakers, a trip along the coast towards Cala Llebeig or Cala Baladrar is a fine route of about 2–3 hours.

Is there a danger from boat traffic when kayaking?

At the beaches of Moraira there is a safety zone that keeps fast craft out. Outside those zones there may be motorboats and sailing boats. Always use a brightly coloured kayak or SUP and wear a buoyancy aid if you go further out to sea. Do not paddle in the channel.

Can I combine kayaking with snorkelling?

Certainly. Paddle a loop along the rocky coast and stop at a good spot for a snorkel. You can hire snorkelling gear from the beach hire or bring your own. This is one of the most popular combinations in the summer months.

Are there guided SUP or kayak trips?

Yes. Some providers in Moraira organise guided group trips by kayak or SUP along the coastline, with a guide who knows the finest spots. Ideal for families or groups. Ask the hire businesses on the beach about the options.
