Chiringuitos near Moraira

Beach shacks near Moraira

A chiringuito is a beach shack: simple, on the water, and without the pretensions of a restaurant. You sit with sand on your feet, eat fish or a rice dish and stay put until the sun has gone. Around Moraira they are spread across the coves of Benissa, Moraira and Jávea.

The season

Many beach shacks run from Easter into October and then close, wholly or partly. If you go out of season, ring before you drive: a closed shack on a deserted cove is a long drive for nothing. Each place’s page gives the times and the telephone number.

Parking at the coves

The car parks at the small coves are limited and full by about eleven in July and August. Come before ten or only after five, and bear in mind that the last stretch down to some coves is steep and not suitable if you are unsteady on your feet.

What to expect

A short menu of fish, squid, salads and often a rice dish served at midday. Prices are a little higher than in the village: you are paying for the setting. Bring cash in case the card connection falters.

Rice dishes at midday

Paella and other rice dishes are eaten at lunch in Spain, not in the evening, and they are made for two people at a time. Allow forty minutes; so order as soon as you arrive and have something small alongside.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a chiringuito?

A beach shack or beach bar: a simple menu, right on the water, often seasonal. The difference from a beach club is that a chiringuito hires out no sunbeds and has no pool.

Are the beach shacks open all year?

No, many run from Easter into October. Out of season it is wise to ring before driving to a cove.

Where can I park at the coves?

Each cove has a small car park, full by about eleven in July and August. Come early or late in the afternoon; each place’s page says how it is on the spot.

Can I eat paella there?

Often yes, but at midday and for two people at a time. Rice dishes are not eaten in the evening in Spain and take some forty minutes to cook, so order as soon as you arrive.

Do I need to book at a beach shack?

In July and August and at weekends it is wise to ring, certainly for lunch. The rest of the year you can usually just sit down.

Where can you stay in Moraira, close to the beach?

Calamora is on the central roundabout of Moraira. The first restaurants and shops are about 50 metres away, the marina with its terraces some 250 metres and the sandy beach about 200 metres. So you need no car to go out to eat. The apartment and the penthouse both have two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and access to the shared swimming pool with its children’s pool. You book directly with the owner. See the apartments.
