Sport fishing in Moraira – fishing on the Costa Blanca
Fishing in Moraira can be done in two ways: from the shore and the rocks around the village, or on an organised trip from the marina. For sport anglers it is above all deep-sea fishing that is interesting: trips leave Moraira for fishing grounds out at sea where bluefin tuna are fished in spring and early summer, on a catch-and-release basis.

This business runs both inshore and deep-sea fishing. The tuna trips go to fishing grounds eight to twelve nautical miles offshore, on a fast fishing boat and with professional tackle. The techniques include trolling, jigging and brumeo (fishing with groundbait). The best season, according to the operator, is late April to July, and depending on the year September and October as well. The tuna are released.
A private boat trip with the option to fish
The Boat Experience sails from the Club Náutico with a skipper and offers half and full days at sea, on which you can fish, swim and snorkel among other things. | Type of trip | Where | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Deep-sea fishing for tuna | 8–12 nautical miles offshore | Season late April–July, sometimes September–October too |
| Inshore fishing | Along the coast | Ask about duration and level |
| Private boat trip with fishing | The Moraira coast and around | With a skipper, half or full day |
Fishing from the shore
People fish from the shore along the rocky coast around Moraira too. Pick a quiet moment, such as early morning or the evening, and keep your distance from swimmers, snorkellers and the entrance to the marina. The coast is largely seagrass meadow (posidonia) and rocky bottom: bring plenty of spare hooks and leads.
Licence and rules
Before you go fishing on your own, check which licence you need and which minimum sizes and protected zones apply. The charter skipper, or Tourist Info Teulada-Moraira at Avda. Madrid 15 (Edificio Espai La Senieta), Moraira, +34 965 745 168, can tell you where to find the current rules. On an organised trip, ask what has been arranged when you book.
Practical tips
- Book a deep-sea trip well ahead; places are limited in the tuna season.
- Take seasickness tablets, sunscreen and a layer against the wind: out on the open sea it is cooler than on the beach.
- When booking, ask about the departure time, the duration and what is included on board (tackle, bait, drinks).

Are there sport fishing boat trips from the harbour of Moraira?

Which fish can I catch in the waters off Moraira?
The Mediterranean off Moraira holds dorada (gilt-head bream), lubina (sea bass), sars (sea bream), squid, octopus, and along the rocky coast moray eels as well. In the summer season pelagic fish such as bonito and blue mackerel pass along the coast.
Do I need a licence to fish in Spain?
Yes. For sea fishing in Spain you need a fishing permit (licencia de pesca). It can be applied for online through the website of the Generalitat Valenciana. The cost is low and the permit is valid for a season. Anglers on board a charter boat are usually covered by the skipper’s licence.
Is there a fish market in Moraira?
Moraira has a small fishing harbour with a local fish auction. On mornings after the fishing boats come in you can sometimes buy fresh fish right at the harbour. The fish market is not open every day – ask locally. Fresh fish is also on sale at the fishmonger in the centre and at the supermarkets in the village.
Are there fishing packages or multi-day sport fishing arrangements?
Some providers in the region offer arrangements in which you go out to sea on several consecutive days, including a guide and tackle. Ideal for anglers who want to go further out or after bigger fish. Ask at the marina or at local sport fishing organisations.
