Temperature through the year

The warmest months are July and August, averaging 29 to 30°C during the day and around 20°C at night. In June and September the afternoon temperature is around 26 to 28°C. In July and August the temperature does not drop below 20°C at night on average; that is called a tropical night, and air conditioning is then not a luxury. From December to February the daytime average is around 16°C; at night the temperature falls to 6 or 7°C. That difference between day and night is noticeable in winter: during the day you can often sit on a terrace in the sun, in the evening you will want a jumper or a jacket.

Sea temperature

The sea warms slowly and cools slowly. From January to March it averages 14°C, in May around 18°C. From June onwards swimming becomes pleasant for most people (22°C) and in August the water reaches its highest point, averaging 26°C. In September and October the sea is still warm (25 and 22°C), while the air is already cooling. Information about the beaches themselves is on the page about beaches in Moraira.

Rainfall and sunshine

July is the driest month, averaging 9 mm of rain. Most rain falls in autumn: at an average of 81 mm, October is the wettest month, followed by November (53 mm) and December (47 mm). On this coast rain often comes in short, heavy showers, after which it clears again. Hours of sunshine range from an average of 5 a day in December to 11 a day in July.

Daylight hours

Around the shortest day of the year Moraira has about 9.5 hours of daylight, around the longest day almost 15 hours (source: Weather Spark). For walks in winter it is wise to finish your route early in the afternoon.

The current weather and the forecast

For the forecast for the coming days your best source is the Spanish meteorological service AEMET (aemet.es), which also publishes warnings for heat, strong wind or heavy rain. If you are planning a walk or a boat trip, pay particular attention to the wind forecast: at sea it can blow a good deal harder than in the village. Tips for a stay in the winter months are on the page about wintering in Moraira.

The gota fría

From late August into November an isolated upper-level depression over the warm sea can bring a great deal of rain in a matter of hours. In Spain this is called a DANA or gota fría, and it is the reason September and October are the wettest months. Such a storm usually passes quickly, but it can put roads and dry riverbeds under water. Never drive through a flooded road, and follow the warnings from AEMET and 112.
