Tolls in France, toll-free in Spain<\/h2>\n
On French motorways you pay tolls (p\u00e9age) at the toll gates, so bring a credit card. In Spain things have changed for the better in recent years. The AP-7 between Tarragona and Alicante has been toll-free since 1 January 2020, and the stretch from the French border at La Jonquera to Tarragona followed on 1 September 2021. On the route to Moraira you therefore no longer pay any toll in Spain.<\/p>\n
Low-emission zones and equipment<\/h2>\nLow-emission zones in France<\/h3>\n
The A6\/A7 past Lyon lies outside the Lyon low-emission zone (ZFE): if you simply drive past, you do not need a Crit\u2019Air sticker. If you go into the city itself the zone does apply, and category 2 or better is required; without a sticker you take the A46 around. Paris has a low-emission zone too, on weekdays from 8am to 8pm. Order the sticker only through the official site certificat-air.gouv.fr, and do so well in advance: motoring organisations advise at least 14 days ahead, and in busy periods delivery can take longer.<\/p>\n
Emergency beacon in Spain<\/h3>\n
Since 2026 a V16 emergency beacon has replaced the warning triangle in Spain. It is not compulsory for foreign-registered cars, but it is strongly recommended. If you hire a car locally, that beacon does have to be in it.<\/p>\n

Shortly before you set off, check the current rules on low-emission zones and required equipment with your own motoring organisation. Rules in French cities are tightened regularly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A logical place to break the journey is the south of France, for instance in the Rh\u00f4ne valley between Lyon and Orange, or further south around Montpellier. There are plenty of hotels along the French motorways for a short stop; in July and August it is wise to book ahead. If you would rather drive less in a day, make it three days with a second stop in northern Spain.<\/p>\n
