Visiting vineyards from Moraira means, above all, heading inland. In the Marina Alta, and particularly in the valley of Jal\u00f3n (Xal\u00f3) and around D\u00e9nia, muscat has been grown for centuries \u2014 the Moscatel de Alejandr\u00eda. It goes into dry and sweet white wines and mistela, alongside red wines from local grapes such as Gir\u00f3. A number of bodegas receive visitors for a tour with a tasting, usually by appointment only.<\/p>\n
Winegrowing is nothing recent here. On the hill of Alt de Benimaquia near D\u00e9nia, the remains of one of the oldest wineries in Europe have been found, from the sixth century BC. Later the Marina Alta became known for its raisins from muscat grapes. While they dried, the grapes were sheltered in bad weather in a riurau, a rural building with wide open arches along one side; you can still see them in many places inland.<\/p>\n
A visit usually takes an hour and a half to two hours: a walk along the vines or through the cellar, an explanation of how the wine is made and a tasting of a few wines with local snacks such as cheese and sausage. Booking is necessary at all the bodegas named below. The harvest falls at the end of August and in September; those are the busiest weeks, but also the liveliest.<\/p>\n
The closest bodega to Moraira: a quarter of an hour\u2019s drive, inland in Teulada \u2014 the municipality Moraira itself belongs to. The winery dates from 1886 and works organically; its grapes are certified by the CAE-CV, the organic label of the Valencian region. The vineyards are managed biodynamically, with plant extracts such as horsetail, nettle and chamomile, without irrigation and harvested by hand. Some of the vines are over sixty years old, and a few plots are pre-phylloxera and so around a century old. The grapes are native varieties, among them moscatel and gir\u00f3.<\/p>\n
The standard visit takes about an hour and a half and costs 28 euros per person: a glass of cava on arrival, a walk through the vineyard, a tour of the winery and the ageing room, an explanation of the riuraus and the raisin trade, and finally a tasting of four wines with a local tapa. There is no minimum group size. If you have more time there is El Paseo<\/strong>: a guided walk of a kilometre and a half through the Mediterranean woodland, past old oaks and carob trees, with a stop at the old lime kiln for a first glass of wine with coca, followed by the winery and a closing tasting of four wines with local products. Allow two and a half hours; 48 euros per person, from ten participants. The riuraus described above stand on the estate itself; it is also home to the Sabors M\u00d3N restaurant, which is closed for renovation at the moment and reopens in March.<\/p>\n Address:<\/strong> Cam\u00ed Abiar Alta 23, 03725 Teulada The wine cooperative of Jal\u00f3n, in the middle of the wine valley. Tour with a tasting of four wines plus a mistela or vermouth with local produce, about 90 minutes, in Spanish, Valencian and English. In 2026 on Wednesdays and Fridays at 16:30 and at weekends at 11:00, about 18 euros a person; book online, at least 24 hours ahead and with a minimum of four participants. The shop is open without a tour as well.<\/p>\n Address:<\/strong> Ctra. Xal\u00f3\u2013Alcalal\u00ed s\/n, 03727 Xal\u00f3 A small winery in Jes\u00fas Pobre, at the foot of the Mont\u00f3 between D\u00e9nia and J\u00e1vea (X\u00e0bia), specialising in muscat, both dry and sweet, and red wine from Gir\u00f3 and Forcalla. The standard visit, with a tour through the vineyard and the cellar and a tasting of three wines, takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes; book in advance.<\/p>\n Place:<\/strong> Jes\u00fas Pobre (D\u00e9nia) A family bodega in Parcent, known for its sweet muscat wines. The tour goes through the production area and the barrel cellar five metres below ground, with a tasting led by owner and winemaker Felipe Guti\u00e9rrez de la Vega. Agree beforehand who will drive back, or choose an excursion with transport.
